June 12, 2011 - Game Eight
Today the Storm played their last game of the regular season against the West Chicago Wildcats.  The Storm was looking to avenge a loss to the Wildcats earlier in the season.  The Storm started out with shots on goal by Anna P. and Allison only three minutes into the game.  Unfortunately the strong start didn’t last and the game became much more competitive.  Twelve minutes into the game the Wildcats took advantage of a Storm defensive breakdown and was able to get a breakaway that resulted in the first goal of the game.  In the 24th minute an inadvertent hand ball in the goal box resulted in a penalty kick for the Wildcats.  On the kick, Maddie C. guessed correctly and saved the shot without giving up a rebound.  Moments later Anna B. received a great pass and broke in alone on the Wildcat goalie.  Unfortunately her shot was saved by the keeper.  The Storm went into the half trailing 1-0.
Seconds after the second half kickoff the Wildcats had another breakaway that resulted in a 2-0 lead.  The Storm continued to fight hard and generated a couple of good shots on goal, but in the 45th minute they allowed another breakaway and a 3-0 deficit in the game.  Finally in the 57th minute the Storm received an indirect kick in the goal box and Allison passed the ball to Melissa who found enough space in the defending wall and cut the deficit to 3-1. Throughout the game Dayna played consistent in all areas.  Kelly, Kayla, Julia, and Brooke regularly pressured the Wildcat defense with solid passing and movement.  Late in the game Peanut and Maddog were moved back to defense and played excellently together eliminating any Wildcat opportunities.  Kylie played great in the field in the first half and played well in goal in the second.  Despite the efforts, the girls lost 3-1.
While the girls didn’t achieve the success that they hoped for during the season, they learned a lot, worked hard in every game, and showed a lot of improvement.  They are excited for the fall season to begin and utilize the skills they’ve learned to start getting the wins their efforts deserve.
The team necklaces were awarded to each of the girls for the season that they have had individually and as a team.  Maddog, Julia, Anna B., Anna P., Dayna, Kelly, Peanut, Kylie, Allison, Maddie C., Kayla, Brooke, and Melissa are great soccer players, but even better kids.

June 11, 2011 - Game Seven
This afternoon the Storm played the undefeated Genesis Shooting Stars at home.  The Storm was intent on playing a strong game and trying to end the Stars’ undefeated season.  The Storm started the game flat, but was able to keep the Stars from rippling the netting.  In the third minute Anna P. aggressively challenged a shot and blocked it off target.  That aggressive behavior was exhibited by all of the girls.  In the 11th minute Maddie C. made a diving save on a shot to keep the game scoreless.  In the first half Kylie was able to play passes into space that allowed Brooke, Dayna, and Allison to all find enough space to take shots on goal; unfortunately Brooke’s hard, left-footed shot went wide of the post, Dayna’s shot forced a strong save, and Allison rifled a shot that was deflected wide.  In the 27th minute the Stars found a ball at the top of the goal box that wasn’t cleared and were able to fire a shot into the goal for a 1-0 lead that they held onto until the end of the half.
The Storm started the second half with determination and fight trying to equal the score.  The Storm continued to play a strong game exhibited by the overall efforts from Melissa and Kayla.  Julia and Maddog played aggressively in all areas of the field and generated scoring chances.  Peanut made several strong saves in goal and was deserving of a shutout, but a couple of bad bounces went the way of the Stars and resulted in two more goals; her dedication to play goalie was representative of her willingness to do anything for the team.  The Storm was defeated 3-0, but their effort was deserving of a much closer outcome.
The team necklaces were awarded to Kayla for her overall game and to Peanut for her field play and play in goal.
The Storm ends their spring season tomorrow against the West Chicago Wildcats.

June 9, 2011 - Game Six
This evening the Storm played a home game against the Fox Valley Strikers trying to avenge a 2-1 loss earlier in the season.  The game started with the Strikers controlling possession, the pace of play, and scoring opportunities.  The Storm defense was being pressured, but didn’t allow any goals due to challenging the ball and when shots were on goal Dayna was there to make the save.  Unfortunately the Strikers were able to open the scoring in the 10th minute off of a direct kick from outside the goal box.  At that point the floodgates opened for the Strikers and they were able to tally several other goals in a short amount of time.  The Storm was able to get a few scoring chances, but the first half was dominated by the Strikers.
At halftime the Storm talked about playing a stronger second half and proving their ability.  They achieved those goals and played much better.  In the 43rd minute the Storm forced a corner kick and Allison played the ball to Maddog in front of the goal and she calmly lifted a shot over the goalie to tally the Storm’s first goal of the game.  The Storm continued to press forward and Kelly was able to pressure the Striker defense with her passes to her teammates.  Peanut played a solid defensive game and took charge at center “D”.  Kayla made several strong saves in the second half to bail out her teammates when needed.  Anna P. and Brooke played great in the midfield while Kylie and Maddie C. helped shore the backline on the defensive end.  Late in the half Anna B. and Julia regularly created possession using their speed and aggression to their advantage.  Throughout the game Melissa was a terror and never allowed the Strikers time or space.  Despite the effort the Storm had a couple of mental breakdowns on defense that resulted in numerous Striker goals that they couldn’t overcome.
The team necklaces were awarded to Maddog for her aggression and determination while playing just hours after having stitches removed from over her eye and to Melissa for playing with a tremendous amount of heart and passion.
The girls resume their season on Saturday afternoon at home against the Genesis Shooting Stars and hope to redeem themselves with a better overall and consistent effort.

June 5, 2011 - Game Five
The girls played the Chicago Fire Jrs. for the second time in eight days this morning at home.  The Storm was missing several players, but the girls were determined to play hard despite another significant size difference.  Unfortunately the Fire started the game with a considerable amount of momentum and pressured the Storm goal repeatedly.  Maddie C. made two strong saves in the second and sixth minutes to keep the game scoreless.  In the 9th minute the Fire took advantage of some open space in the goal box and delivered a powerful shot to take a 1-0 lead.  Dayna jumpstarted the team with an incredible work-rate and she was able to generate several scoring chances and maintain excellent ball possession.  In the 29th minute, Melissa collected the ball in the Storm defensive goal box and was able to dribble through the entire Fire team before riffling a shot that was saved by the Fire keeper.  In the last two minutes of the half Julia made a great pass to Brooke which resulted in a shot on goal and Anna P. also had a great scoring chance that was deflected just wide of the near post.  At halftime the Fire led 1-0.
The Storm continued fighting hard in the second half and Kelly took a shot in the game’s 37th minute.  The Storm defense kept the Fire at bay not allowing many shots on goal and when there was a shot Allison was there to make the save.  In the 43rd minute Allison made an incredible save while diving to her left; quite possibly the save of the year.  Five minutes later Dayna had a great cross to Kayla whose shot was saved.  Unfortunately the Fire tallied a second goal in the 55th minute to take a 2-0 lead.  Despite the disappointment the Storm continued to exhibit excellent soccer skills.   There was some great team passing, the girls were challenging the Fire in all areas of the field which resulted in deflected shots, and a remarkable team effort.  Kylie and Maddie C. executed a perfect overlapping run which allowed Maddie to drive the ball down the sideline and cross the ball to the middle of the goal box.  The team also had many sequences of quick one and two touch passing that allowed them to transition the ball quickly from the defending zone, through the midfield, and into the attacking zone.
Despite the incredible team effort, the Storm was unable to ripple the netting on the goal and lost 2-0.  The outcome was not representative of the competitiveness of the game.
The team necklaces were awarded to Anna P. for her strong defensive game and aggression and to Julia for continually putting pressure on the Fire defense with her speed and activity.
The Storm has a busy week of soccer this week with one practice and then three games in four days.  The girls are disappointed that they haven’t won, but they are still working hard and having fun.  The results will come!!!

May 28, 2011 - Game Four

This morning the Storm had an away game in Naperville against the Chicago Fire, Jrs.  The weather was overcast, but the temperatures were comfortable while the field conditions were less than desirable.  Early in the game was a feeling out period for both teams, but eventually the Storm generated a scoring chance in the 10th minute.  Melissa’s corner kick fell to Kylie and her shot forced a strong save from the Fire keeper.  Seven minutes later Kayla was able to take a shot on goal, but it was saved by the Fire goalie.  Maddog repeatedly found space on the right side, dribbling at the Fire defense, and then making a pass springing her teammates to space.  In the 23rd minute a Fire player made a strong run down the left side, but was being pressured by Allison who eventually won the ball with a strong slide tackle from the side (which is almost unheard of at this age).  Kelly was able to generate a shot in the 28th minute, but it was saved.  Finally in the last two minutes Allison had shots on goal in successive possessions, but one went wide and the second went over the goal.  The first half ended in a scoreless draw 0-0.

At halftime the Storm talked about maintaining pressure on the Fire goal and continuing controlling possession of the ball.  They immediately succeeded with those goals; in the first minute of the second half Melissa was able to generate some space and take a shot forcing a good save.  Two minutes later Melissa received a pass from Peanut and took a hard left footed shot from outside the top of the center of the box and slotted it past the Fire keeper for a 1-0 lead.  In the 40th minute Maddie C. made a strong cross to Kelly whose shot forced a diving save that was muffed by the Fire goalie, but unfortunately Kelly was barely beat to the rebound by the goalie.  Two minutes later Peanut had another cross to Kelly, but her shot was stopped.  When the Fire attacked the Storm zone Anna P. was there to thwart their efforts time and time again.  Determined to score again, the Storm continued to attack the Fire defense and finally Dayna played a great ball to Allison springing her on a breakaway and Allison beat the goalie for a 2-0 lead.  Julia continued stepping up from her left defensive spot, took space away from the Fire and kept the offensive pressure on the opposing goal.  Brooke continued her strong form from the last few games and played solid on both ends of the field.  The Storm continued to play strong defense, but unfortunately had two breakdowns in the last 15 minutes of the game to allow the Fire to pull out a 2-2 tie.

The team necklaces were awarded to Kylie and Allison for superb games and efforts on both ends of the field.

The Storm returns to action next Sunday against the same Chicago Fire Jrs, team at home.  The Storm is confident that the passing they exhibited, their effort, and better field conditions at home will lead to their first victory of the season.

May 22, 2011 - Game Three
This afternoon the Storm tried to get their first victory of the season against the TCSA Nitros at Breen Park in an away game.  The conditions were warm and windy, but much better than what the team has faced in recent weeks.  The game started with a back and forth affair with both teams controlling the ball in the midfield and unable to generate high quality scoring chances due to solid, team defense.  Finally in the 25th minute Allison was fouled outside of the goal box on the right side of the Storm’s attacking side and she earned a direct kick for her team.  On the resulting free kick, she hammered a shot into the far side of the goal to take a 1-0 lead.  Two minutes later Maddog had an excellent cross that just bounced over the extended feet of Kylie on the near post and Kayla on the far post, but the effort exhibited the great play by the Storm.  In the 33rd minute Kayla made a great pass to Julia who forced a strong save by the Nitros keeper.  Throughout the first half Dayna made some incredible aggressive saves while in goal keeping the score 1-0.
The second half started much like the first half with both teams playing hard, but not generating any high quality scoring chances.  Eventually the Nitros tallied the equalizing goal in the 45th minute.  The Storm continued to press and Melissa played a great ball to Anna B. off of a direct kick and she blistered a shot off of the right goal post, narrowly missing scoring the second goal for the Storm.  Maddie C. followed up the shot off of the post, but her shot went just wide.  The Storm continued to play a strong game and overcame a bigger team and questionable officiating to achieve a 1-1 tie.
Throughout the game Anna P. played solid in all areas of the field.  Kelly repeatedly made excellent passes to her teammates creating scoring chances.  Julia, who had to leave due to an arm injury, played with her usual pace and pressured the Nitro defense.  Peanut continued to play with her newfound physicality and never was intimidated on the field.  Kayla played shutdown defense from start to finish.  Brooke played great defense and made many great one-touch passes while playing in an attacking position.  Kylie once again exhibited the Storm’s heart and determination by refusing to get beat or intimidated despite a significant size difference.
The team necklaces were awarded to Kelly and Brooke for playing excellent games on both ends of the field and continually fighting to win.
The Storm returns to action next weekend against the Chicago Fire Jrs. in Naperville.

May 12, 2011 - Game Two

Tonight the Storm played against the Fox Valley Strikers U11 team.  After a quick downpour before the game the weather was perfect for soccer.  The Storm started slowly allowing several Strikers shots, but Kayla played strong in goal turning them all aside.  In the eleventh minute the Strikers took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Storm back line and capitalized with the game’s opening goal.  The Storm fought back and Maddog was able to get off a shot from the left wing after beating the Striker defense for a breakaway.  Finally in the 25th minute Allison fired a left-footed shot from outside the top of the 18-yard box and tied the game at 1.  In the 31st minute Kelly found some space in the Striker goal box and was able to get off a shot that required a strong save.  The half ended with the score tied 1-1.
The Storm started the second half with a better effort than the first half and Melissa was able to get a breakaway in the game’s 37th minute; unfortunately a Striker defender fought back and pressured her so Melissa couldn’t get an uncontested shot on goal.  A second defensive lapse by the Storm allowed the Strikers to take a 2-1 lead in the 41st minute.  A few minutes later Kayla made an excellent save to keep the game a one goal deficit.  From that point on the game was a back and forth battle.  Peanut, Brooke, Dayna, and Anna P. kept the Strikers from any more good scoring chances by playing shut-down defense.  Maddie C. replaced Kayla in goal and was aggressive in the goal box to get to any free passes; up until that point she had played a great field game.  Julia wasn’t feeling well, but she fought through and played hard, making some strong passes to her teammates.  In the 63rd minute Anna B. had a breakaway after receiving a pass from a teammate.  An instant before taking her shot on goal she was taken down from behind by a Striker defender; shockingly she wasn’t awarded a penalty kick.  In the second half, Kylie was able to pressure the Striker defense from an attacking position, but was unable to ripple the Striker net.  Unfortunately the Storm lost 2-1.
The team necklaces were awarded to Kayla for playing a strong game in goal and in the field and to Dayna for playing a solid, mistake-free game.
The Storm resumes their regular season on May 22nd against the TCSA Nitros.

Hawks Cup Summary - May 7 and May 8
This weekend the Storm participated in the Hawks Cup in Oak Brook, IL.  The Storm opened their tournament on Saturday morning in cool, but dry weather against a team from Lyons Township.  The girls scored a first half goal and settled for a 1-1 tie after allowing a second half goal.  In the afternoon the weather was much colder and windier when the girls played against the Wilmette Wings.  The Storm surrendered two late first half goals and fought hard throughout, but they were unable to ripple the Wings’ net and lost 2-0.  On Mother’s Day morning, under perfect conditions,  the Storm faced the River Forest Rapids and needed a decisive victory to advance to the Championship game.  Unfortunately the girls lost 1-0 despite a great team effort.
Throughout the weekend the entire team played good, clean, physical soccer against much bigger opponents.  Here are some highlights of the tournament.  Melissa scored the first goal of the season when she hammered home a shot after Anna B. had dented the post with a hard shot.  Maddie C. put forth her usual incredible work rate on both ends of the field and also played goalie.  Anna P. played physical soccer and was able to thwart numerous offensive chances by the other teams with strong defense.  Dayna made some excellent passes to her teammates and made some stellar saves while playing goalie as well.  Kelly generated several good offensive chances for herself and her teammates.  Maddog exhibited some great footwork and made her initial appearance in goal.  Peanut played great defense and midfield and moved the ball quickly.  Anna B. had several great shots on goal and played tough at center defense.  Allison played goalie and was able to fire numerous shots on goal; also denting the post in the tournament.  Kayla showed that she wasn’t intimidated by the size difference and played very physical defense.  Melissa made several long runs with the ball, played strong defense, and put forth a great effort.  Brooke, who was less than 100% due to a horrible cough, played great soccer throughout the tournament and showed great dedication and heart.  Kylie also showed tremendous heart and a lack of fear playing physically against the much larger opponents.  Julia showed her great speed and never got intimidated while playing as physically as her teammates did.
The team necklaces were awarded to Allison and Maddie C. for putting forth great work rates the entire tournament and playing excellent soccer.  The necklaces could have been awarded to every girl on the team.  The true MVP’s of the tournament were the families; especially the moms for supporting the girls on Mother’s Day!
The Storm moves back to their regular season with a game this Thursday against the Fox Valley Strikers.

April 16, 2011 - Game One
The Storm opened their spring 2011 season at home against the West Chicago United Wildcats in less than ideal weather conditions.  By the time the game had begun the rain (and snow) had stopped, but the field was very wet and there were very strong winds from the west throughout the game.  The heavy winds made the already cold temperatures feel even colder.  The Storm began the game having to attack the goal heading into the wind which made the first half very challenging.  The Wildcats controlled the ball in the Storm's defensive end of the field throughout much of the first half, but the Storm battled and played strong defense.  Unfortunately the Wildcats were able to capitalize on one defensive mishap when the Storm was unable to clear the ball and it found it's way to an open player in front of the goal.  Heading into the second half the Wildcats led 1-0.
At the start of the second half the Wildcats generated some pressure, but then the Storm was able to get back into the flow of the game and they began maintaining more ball control.  The Storm was able to generate more offensive chances, but were unable to get a high quality scoring chance.  Late in the second half the Wildcats had a corner kick that squirted off of the foot of a Storm player to a Wildcat and she slotted it home for a 2-0 lead.
Throughout the game Kayla, Brooke, Dayna, and Melissa played excellent defense.  Kelly and Peanut played strong games in the midfield and were able to start some breakaways individually or with strong passes to their teammates.  Anna P. made some great passes on long through balls to Julia and Kylie who were able to control the ball into dangerous positions of the Wildcat defense.  Anna B. played great defense in the first half and had the best shot on goal when she blistered a shot that was saved by the Wildcat defense.  Maddie C. and Allison played great in goal and also played very strong field games on the offensive and defensive ends of the field.  Despite the effort from the Storm the size difference between the two teams and the increasingly physical game that the referees allowed led to a 2-0 defeat for the Storm.  The girls play the Wildcats later in the season and hope to exact some revenge (in better weather conditions).
The team necklaces were given to Melissa and Kayla for their incredible efforts and strong games that they played; although the necklaces could have been given to any of the girls on the team.
The Storm hopes to get their first victory of the new spring season next weekend when they play the Fire Jrs. Blue.
